Biography

Dr. Mark R. Dalman is an Associate Professor at Kent State University College of Podiatric Medicine (KSU-CPM), where he leads the Dalman Integrative Microbial Dynamics Lab. He holds a Bachelor’s degree with a double major in Zoology and Environmental Science from Miami University-Oxford. He earned his MS in Environmental Science, focusing on the impact of climate change on the flora and fauna of San Salvador Island in the Bahamas, and his Ph.D. in Integrative Bioscience from the University of Akron, where his research centered on the molecular biology of leptin signaling in zebrafish embryos. Dr. Dalman has built a robust career in teaching, research, and mentorship.

Research and Publications
Dr. Dalman’s research encompasses genomics, molecular epidemiology, and innovative teaching methodologies. His most recent accomplishments include securing a grant from the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) to explore ADAR RNA editing patterns as biomarkers for predicting suicide risk, and an accepted manuscript in JAPMA on the MC1R gene's influence on analgesic responses in redheads from a podiatric setting in 2024.

Awards and Grants
Dr. Dalman’s contributions to teaching and research have been recognized with several awards, including the 2024 Center for Teaching and Learning’s (CTL) Teaching Scholars Award and 2022 Healthy Communities Research Initiative Faculty Launchpad Award. His research funding portfolio has grown to over $600,000, supporting diverse projects that bridge clinical and educational applications.

Professional Involvement and Mentorship
An active member of the American Society of Microbiology and the International Society for Computational Biology, Dr. Dalman regularly contributes to the scientific community as a peer reviewer for a multitude of journals and as a judge for science fairs and academic competitions at both the regional and state level. He has mentored numerous students at various educational levels, from high school to postdoctoral fellows, guiding them in research, career development, and professional growth.

Commitment to Service
Dr. Dalman is actively involved in academic service at KSU-CPM, serving on multiple committees, including the APMLE 1 task force, Curriculum Committee, Research Enhancement Committee, and the Admissions Committee. He also contributes to university governance as a member of the Faculty Senate and the University Teaching Council. Beyond the university, Dr. Dalman is committed to community outreach, participating as a judge, speaker, and mentor in various scientific and educational events.

Teaching Philosophy
Dr. Dalman believes in a dynamic, interactive approach to science education, emphasizing the classroom as a collaborative and supportive environment. He aims to inspire future healthcare professionals by integrating real-world research into his courses in Clinical Microbiology, Immunology, and Medical Genetics.
