John Kroll

John Kroll, M.Ed., is an adjunct professor in the School of Media and Journalism. He teaches courses in reporting, multimedia, storytelling, the business of journalism, and media ethics. He is also project co-director of NewsTrain, a series of regional journalism training workshops offered around the country by the News Leaders Association.

Kroll worked as a reporter, copy editor, photo editor, and page designer for newspapers including the Detroit Free Press, Chicago Sun-Times, and Cleveland Plain Dealer. At The Plain Dealer, his roles included columnist and deputy editor of the business section before switching to digital journalism. He designed and ran the newsroom’s first and only formal training program. As Online Editor, he prepared the staff for a transition to an online-first approach to news.

His textbook, “News Writing and Reporting,” is used by Kent State’s Reporting course.
