In honor of Graduate Student Appreciation Week, the School of Media and Journalism would like to congratulate its graduate students in the Class of 2021!
Graduate Student Appreciation Week was started in 1993 by the National Association of Graduate and Professional Students as a way to support and appreciate graduate and professional students. The week seeks to emphasize the contributions, impact, and value of graduate and professional students on campuses throughout the United States. The Division of Graduate Studies at Kent State is recognizing Graduate Student Appreciation Week, April 5-9, 2021.
In honor of this week, learn about some students in the School of Media and Journalism who are nearing the end of their graduate school journeys.
Lauren Buchanan has focused on media management during her time as a graduate student in the School of Media and Journalism. She has worked full-time at television stations in Cleveland and St. Louis during her graduate school career and recently transitioned to a public relations/marketing role. Her favorite Kent State experiences have been working alongside Professor Jeff Fruit for her final project focusing on the media's role in addressing trauma among children and adolescents.
Jason Buhrmester has focused on the journalism education during his time as a graduate student in the School of Media and Journalism. He is an award-winning editor, author and journalism instructor and is hoping to pursue further journalism teaching opportunities at the college level. His masters professional project focused on expanding college curricula on freelance and entrepreneurial journalism.
As a graduate student, Lindsay Coppens was happy to learn many new skills and concepts to apply to her work teaching journalism and advising The Harbinger, the student newspaper at Algonquin Regional High School (Northborough, Mass.). Lindsay loved connecting with other publication advisers and professional journalists through her Kent State classes, and she's proud her professional project was published in the latest issue of Communication: Journalism Education Today magazine.
Aaron Ruegg focused on digital Public Relations (PR) and User Experience Design (UXD) as a part-time graduate student in the School of Media and Journalism. He is the supervisor of state communications for FirstEnergy Corp. in Akron, Ohio, and is looking forward to expanding on his experience in corporate communications through digital channels. Aaron enjoyed the tailor-made educational experience and flexibility through the MDJ program while he balanced a family and a full-time job.
