Brave New Films will screen its newest documentary, “Unmanned: America’s Drone Wars,” at Kent State University Thursday, Nov. 20, 2014.
The organization is a champion for social justice issues, educating the public through screenings of its six feature films. Including more than 70 interviews, “Unmanned” shows the personal impact of the use of drones in the War on Terror.
“’Unmanned: America's Drone Wars’ is a film about the reach of the American military and the personal costs of drone warfare,” Laurie Jones, programs director at Brave New Films, said. “Through the War on Terror, US drones have gone into countries in which we are not openly at war. We have killed over 2,500 people in Pakistan alone. Over 300 children have been killed, and for what? Any student who is or will be actively participating in the political process needs to form an opinion on this issue.”
Jones will travel with the film to Kent State and present it to students, faculty, staff and community members, encouraging discussion about this and other hot-button issues, such as the militarization of America’s police departments.
“I am sure that both students and professors at Kent State are reminded through the university's history of the personal costs of war,” Jones said. “With the university's collective memory, the audience will have a unique perspective on the use of military force. Brave New Films encourages open debate and ranges of opinions. I hope this event gives students something to really consider.”
The screening is presented as part of the 2014-15 Diversity Speaker Series. “Unmanned” will be shown at 6:30 p.m. in the Franklin Hall FirstEnergy Auditorium (Room 340), Thursday, Nov. 20. The event is free and open to the community.
