The Kent State School of Journalism and Mass Communication and the Media Law Center for Ethics and Access will host the fifth annual Media at the Movies on Tuesday, March 5. The event will open its doors at 5:30 p.m. and will begin at 6 p.m. in Franklin Hall’s FirstEnergy Auditorium (Room 340).
Media at the Movies this year will feature "The Post," last year's Steven Spielberg film starring Meryl Streep and Tom Hanks. It's the true story of the Washington Post's decision to publish the Pentagon Papers about US involvement in Vietnam.
Immediately after the showing, there will be an ethics discussion related to the film. The speakers during the discussion are...
Mark Goodman-Mark Goodman joined the School of Journalism and Mass Communication in 2008 as the school's first Knight Chair in Scholastic Journalism after serving 22 years at the Student Press Law Center in Washington, D.C. Goodman has a journalism degree from the University of Missouri–Columbia and a law degree from Duke University. Goodman has received awards for his work including the First Amendment Award from the Reporters Committee for Freedom of the Press, a First Amendment Award from the Society of Professional Journalists, the Intellectual Freedom Award from the National Council of Teachers of English and many more.
Jim Crutchfield- Jim Crutchfield is a former president and publisher of the Akron Beacon Journal and Ohio.com. He has a long portfolio of newspapers and news organizations he has worked at including the Pittsburgh Press, Pittsburgh Post-Gazette, Detroit Free Press, Press-Telegram in Long Beach, CA, and Philadelphia Newspapers. Crutchfield returned to Akron as general manager in 2000 and publisher in 2001. Crutchfield is the president of the Board of Directors of PublicSource and a board member of The Nightlight cinema in Akron.
Ann Schierhorn- Ann is a KSU Emeritus Professor, who was an intern at the Washington Post at the time. Before teaching at Kent State for 30 years, Schierhorn was an editor at newspapers in Rochester, N.Y., and Iowa City, Iowa. She now is focusing on researching civil rights. In the “They Led the Way,” exhibit, she chronicled the lives of African American students who desegregated the schools in her hometown of Tallahassee, Fla. The museum exhibit won a national award of merit from the American Association for State and Local History.
Kim Garchar- Kim Garchar is Associate Professor of philosophy at Kent State University. Dr. Garchar is a member of the Ethics Committee at Summa Health System Akron City Hospital and of the executive board of the Society for the Advancement of American Philosophy. Her current work interrogates moral personhood, responses to suffering, and the logical inconsistencies in health policy and law. Dr. Garchar came to Kent State in 2008 after receiving her doctorate at the University of Oregon in 2006 and spending two years as a post-doctoral fellow at the University of Colorado Denver’s Health and Sciences Center.
Event Details
- The event is free and there will be free popcorn provided on a first come/first served basis.
- The film will begin promptly before 6:15 p.m. and run for about two hours.
- The panel discussion and Q&A session will begin immediately following the movie.
