Adventure Trips

We offer unique adventure trips each semester in Ohio and around the country. All trips are designed to be beginner friendly with a focus on learning new outdoor skills. Trips can range from a few hours to multiple days/nights. Types of trips we have offered in the past include: hiking, skiing/snowboarding, kayaking, backpacking, mountain biking, rock climbing, rafting, rappelling, camping, and more.

A pre-program email will be sent to all registered participants. This email will contain an introduction from the staff leaders, information about what to bring, what to wear, an agenda, and other pertinent details. All trips and clinics require a minimum number of participants. The Adventure Center will contact all registered participants if the program will be canceled. All trips are a level 1 difficulty with no experience necessary and mild physical exertion unless noted. Contact actrips@kent.edu with any questions.

Cancellation Policy: No refunds will be given within 7 days of the program.

Outdoor Climbing Day Trip 

Enjoy a day of outdoor climbing at Logtown. Tucked away on the eastern edge of Ohio in the little village of Lisbon, is a small rock climbing crag by the name of Logtown. This once active rock quarry is now home to one of the only places to lead climb in the entire state. There is a little something for everyone with routes ranging in grades from 5.3 to 5.12d. This trip is great for all experience levels from beginner to experienced. The fee includes transportation, equipment, and instruction.  

  • Date & Time: Saturday, Apr. 6 from 10:30 a.m. - 6:30 p.m.

  • Difficulty: Level 1. No experience necessary, mild physical exertion. 

Cascade Valley Metro Park Day Hike 

Participants will have the opportunity to hike a 2.4 mile beginner hiking trail in Cascade Valley. Chuckery Trail Loop is a 2.4 mile, moderately trafficked, loop trail located in Akron, Ohio that features a great forest setting, beautiful view of the Cuyahoga River, and is good for all skill levels.  No prior experience is needed. The fee includes transportation, equipment and instruction.

Ohio Weekend Backpacking Trip 

Considering a convenient weekend trip within Ohio? Come join the Adventure Center on an overnight backpacking trip through Shawnee State Park in some nice spring weather. We will be hiking within this 63,000-acre forest which is often called the “Little Smokies.” This trail is part of the Southern Appalachian foothills near the Ohio River and was once the hunting grounds for the Native American Shawnee tribes. We will be backpacking for 3 days with 35 or more pounds of gear on our backs and spending 2 nights camping in the woods. Get ready for some fun! The fee includes transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.

  • Difficulty: Level 2 - Some hiking experience preferred, moderate physical exertion. 

Outdoor Climbing Overnight Trip 

Want to spend your weekend climbing outdoors? Join us in Kentucky as we climb, hike, and camp in Red River Gorge. Known for its world class climbing and hiking, the natural beauty of the Gorge is breathtaking. The fee includes transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.  We will spend each night camping, and each day climbing and/or hiking. The fee includes transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.

West Branch Camping & Rock Climbing Trip 

Come rock climb and camp at Ohio’s newest outdoor climbing spot!  Just opened in the fall of 2023, West Branch offers great beginner-friendly climbing.  We will camp for two nights, climb a lot, and probably do some hiking too!  The fee includes transportation, equipment, meals, and instruction.

Full Moon Float

Here’s your chance to enjoy a beautiful sunset, relax in nature, and let your worries drift into the night as we paddle into the sunset on a peaceful and serene lake right down the road from Kent. Transportation is provided.

Service Trip - Cuyahoga Valley National Park

What better way to celebrate Earth Day than to give back to the Earth? Join us in a volunteer event cleaning up trails at Cuyahoga Valley National Park as a way to give back to nature! Together, we can keep our beautiful backyard looking pristine! Transportation is provided.

Lake Kayaking Trip

We will be going to Trail Lake Park for a beginner-friendly paddle around the lake in some kayaks! There is beautiful scenery, wildlife, and fresh air to take in while on the water. We will provide an introduction to kayaking before we get on the water going over lake safety, paddling strokes, and more! There is also an accessible kayak put-in at the docks for easy entry into your kayak. The fee includes transportation from the SRWC, all equipment and instruction.

Cuyahoga River Kayak Trip 

This trip will be held locally on the Cuyahoga River.  We will meet at the SRWC (or you can meet us at Kramer Fields-just let us know ahead of time!).   From there, we will paddle to Brust Park in Munroe Falls.  We will then take the shuttle back to the Student Recreation and Wellness Center.   A staff member will be with you on the water for the entire trip. The trip is 4.0 miles long, is beginner friendly and no prior experience is needed. The fee includes transportation, all equipment and instruction. There is a three participant minimum to run this program.
