Fingerprinting & Background Checks
Campus Safety & Security offers electronic fingerprinting and background check services for both federal (FBI) and state (BCI) for students. Students are not required to use Campus Safety & Security for their background checks and are free to go to another WebCheck Agency (see list below). However, in addition to being conveniently located at Kent State Stark, Campus Safety & Security charges much less than other agencies.
IMPORTANT - NOT AVAILABLE TO THE PUBLIC
Background Check services are ONLY for faculty, staff and students. We are unable to service the general public.
HOW DO I GET MY BACKGROUND CHECK?
Step 1: Complete a Background Check Request Form
You may fill out and print the Background Check Request Form prior to coming to your appointment to save time if you wish. If you forget, a copy can be provided to you upon your arrival at the Campus Safety & Security Office.
CRITICAL NOTE: Campus Safety & Security is not responsible for knowing the appropriate or specific Ohio Revised Code required for your background check.
It is HIGHLY recommended that students confirm their required codes with their professor or program manager. Campus Safety & Security and its officers are not responsible for the use of incorrect codes. We submit specifically what you request on your request form.
If you marked the form incorrectly, students will have to pay again for any additional background checks with the corrected codes or a corrected entity address. We cannot issue refunds.
Step 2: Make an Appointment
All background checks are by appointment only to ensure that our office will be appropriately staffed to best serve you.
Appointments are available:
Monday - Thursday: 8 a.m. to 7 p.m.
Friday: 8 a.m. to 5 p.m.
MAKE AN APPOINTMENT

The purchase of one background check (FBI, BCI, or combined FBI/BCI) yields one physical copy (can be sent to any domestic address) and one electronic copy (limited options, not an email address). Departments may also authorize charges for fingerprinting to their department budgets. Please make arrangements in advance with Campus Safety & Security.
Step 4: Come to your appointment
Background checks are completed in the Campus Safety & Security Office in Main Hall Room 117 and 117A. Parking is most convenient in Lots 100 & 101.
What to Bring to your Appointment
- Your current government issued ID (driver’s license, state ID, passport)
- Background Check Request Form
a. Know the Ohio Revised Code for your background check
(check with your professor if unsure)
i. BCI Reason Codes
ii. FBI Reason Codes
b. Campus Safety & Security does not know where your results should go, so please know the appropriate recipient. This is your responsibility and we are not liable if you have the results sent to the wrong location.
- Know your Social Security Number
- Bring your payment confirmation number or take a screen shot just for your piece of mind that your payment has gone through
HOW LONG DOES IT TAKE FOR RESULTS TO COME BACK?
In short, it depends. The Bureau of Criminal Identification and Investigation will usually complete a BCI and FBI criminal background check within 48 hours. It can take up to 30 days if the address used is not the most current or other reasons.
If your program has a need to have the results mailed directly from BCI&I (rare that this would occur) it could take up to 4 to 6 weeks before you or the address you requested receive your results in the mail. Generally, these results would be electronically sent from BCI&I to an entity such as the Ohio Board of Nursing, Ohio Department of Education or Ohio Department of Jobs and Family Services.
