Kent State University’s Florence Summer Institute was launched in June 2014 to provide a four-week snapshot of Kent State Florence, a semester-long study abroad program that the university has been offering for more than 40 years.
The inaugural program was so successful that Kent State’s Office of Global Education extended a generous offer to Kent State University at Stark students for the summer 2015 trip to Florence.
The first five Stark Campus students whose applications are accepted into the program will receive a $500 scholarship for their trip expenses. The February 1 deadline is fast approaching. Interested students are encouraged to apply immediately to be eligible for these scholarships.
The condensed summer version encourages a more diverse student population to increase their global competitiveness through an education that includes a unique opportunity to experience the Italian culture. During the program, students study at Palazzo dei Cerchi, exposing them to a modern and 13th-century Florence. The prestigious and ancient palace, acquired by Kent State in 2003, is located in the center of Florence. This year will include the choice of an additional business course that will allow students to extend the four-week program by one more week.
The faculty are excited to welcome a new group of students this summer. “Studying abroad and learning about different cultures doesn’t only prepare students for future jobs, it also broadens their minds. It is a good investment for success and a unique experience in their lives,” says Dr. Marcello Fantoni, associate provost of the Office of Global Education.
