Art Walk along Sculpture Mile and Percent for Art Projects

Recognizing the state's responsibility to foster culture and the arts and to encourage the development of artists and craftspersons, the Ohio Legislature enacted the Percent for Art legislation. Funds are provided through the Ohio Arts Council for works of art for new or renovated public buildings with Capital appropriations of more than $4 million. For such projects, the law provides that one percent of the total appropriation be allocated for the acquisition, commissioning and installation of art work.

Works of art commissioned by Kent State University related to the Percent for Art program have been installed at various campus locations throughout the years. Now deemed the "Art Walk along Sculpture Mile", newer sculptures were installed during the summer of 2010 along the University Esplanade, a trail through campus featuring statues representing some of the highlights of the university.
