Bowman Hall Mechanical and Building Improvements KSU-17S022
Bowman Hall's failing HVAC system was replaced with a new, central air handling unit and VAV boxes with a new duct distribution system. In addition, a fire suppression system was installed throughout the building. Over half of the ceilings and light fixtures in the offices and classrooms were replaced. Summer 2018 renovations involved the first floor offices and classrooms, including installations of new HVAC systems, additional fire suppression, new lay-in ceilings and lighting. Regency Construction Services, Inc. served as the Design-Builder of this project.
College of Podiatric Medicine Re-Roofing KSU-18L039
The College of Podiatric Medicine's roofs were original to the building construction in 1979; the shingles were at the end of their lifespan and incurring frequent repairs. The membrane roofs were also due for replacement and were done to coordinate with sloped roofs due to the details required. The connectors were poorly constructed and a source of frequent leaks. This project involved tear-off and replacement of the sloped shingle roofs and flat membrane roofing on the three major sections of the building. The two connectors, which were added at the third floor level when the 3rd floor attic spaces were built-out, were reconstructed. E. Lee Construction is working on punch list items to complete this project. Payto Architects, Inc. designed this project.
Dix Stadium Women's Lacrosse Locker Room Renovation KSU-17L112
Women's Lacrosse is a new addition to Kent State University Intercollegiate Athletics' competitive sports teams, beginning the fall of 2018. There was not adequate space in the Field House to accommodate the new team's locker room. Dix Stadium room 104 was renovated for the new KSU Women's Lacrosse team locker room. Renovations included mechanical and plumbing updates, new ADA restroom, new lighting, flooring and new wood lockers for 35 players. Feghali Brothers, LLC's construction was completed this summer. PTA Engineering, Inc. designed the engineering portions of this project.
East Liverpool Purinton Hall HVAC and Sanitary Sewer Improvements KSU-17S301
In East Liverpool's Purinton Hall, the existing HVAC system was replaced because it no longer performed to keep the building comfortable; many components were past warranty and replacement parts were no longer readily available. The sanitary system was investigated for cross-connections. York-Mahoning Mechanical Contractors' on-site construction was completed this summer. Scheeser Buckley Mayfield, LLC designed this project.
Kent Campus Classroom, Laboratory, Auxiliary Buildings and Utility Assets Energy Conservation Project, Phase Two KSU-16L091
Phase Two of the original Kent Campus Energy Conservation Project enables Kent State University to reach the twenty percent (20%) energy savings goal established in House Bill 251. Phase Two is the last phase needed to meet the original goal and will provide solutions for best in class Power Plant operations, substantial retirement of deferred renewal and expected savings/revenue of over $12 million after sixteen (16) years. The scope of Phase Two involved select LED retrofits, HVAC and infrastructure enhancements, select window and roof replacements, envelope repairs, Enterprise Optimization System at the combined heat and Power Plant. The Brewer-Garret Company's Performance Contract and their Limited Scope Services Agreement work were completed in the fall.
Kent Campus Master Plan KSU-17L001
The Kent Campus of Kent State University has an enrollment of 28,981 students, houses 6,453 students on the 900-acre campus. The Kent Campus includes 128 buildings or structures, of which 74 are major academic buildings. The campus, founded in 1910, witnessed a major expansion in the 1960s with more than 50 buildings constructed. While multiple, large-scale planning efforts were completed over the last ten years, the university last completed a comprehensive facilities master plan in 1996. During their March 2018 meeting, the Kent State University Board of Trustees adopted a 10-year facilities master plan that embarks on a $1 billion transformative journey of the Kent Campus to better serve the needs of students and the entire Kent State community. The plan enhances the welcoming feel of the university’s iconic Front Campus and genuine sense of place, elevates inclusive healthy living-learning environments, links a campuswide series of spaces focused on innovation and expands the dynamic synergy with the city of Kent. The Kent Campus Master Plan would be implemented in three phases over the next decade and would guide the alignment of university and external resources and capital investments with the objectives set forth in Kent State’s strategic roadmap. In addition to building improvements and purpose-built classrooms, studios and labs, the plan includes a walkable campus core with new sidewalks and bike trails and proposes the extension of Kent State’s iconic Front Campus to include a signature Main Street gateway to the university. Anchoring the Main Street gateway is a new College of Business Administration building and the addition of green space and a modern parking deck to replace current parking lots near the gateway entrance. Closer to the city of Kent, an innovation zone is planned adjacent to the Starbucks/Captain Brady site. New 24/7 maker spaces, multidisciplinary studios and dining would form an innovation hub within the redesigned Art Building to meet student, faculty and staff needs. Teaching and learning enhancements include an addition to the Aeronautics and Technology building, a new Kent State University Airport classroom building, research lab expansion at the Integrated Sciences Building and dynamic renovations to the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MAC Center) and Kent Student Center, to name a few. The strategies were developed with broad input from a series of highly engaged town hall and community meetings, and numerous informational sessions were held to seek input from students, faculty and staff. This 10-year plan will touch every college on the Kent Campus and strengthen our connection to our home city of Kent. Details about the updated plan can be found at the A Transformed KSU website.
Kent Center for the Performing Arts Speech Pathology and Audiology Addition and Renovation KSU-16L113
The addition and renovation of the Kent State Center for the Performing Arts A-Wing provides a more organized program for student and patient accessibility and services provided by the School of Speech Pathology and Audiology. The addition also gives a public access point for those visiting and will allow for more functional space within the suite for additional clinic and observation rooms. A new addition with a drop-off area and canopy was built at the west end of the A-Wing, and the existing reception and west lab spaces were renovated. This project was designed by Van Auken Akins Architects, LLC and Town Center Construction, LLC was the General Contractor.
Kent Campus Road Rehabilitation KSU-18L085
Many of the Kent Campus roadways had received increased traffic with the construction detours caused by the Summit Street Improvements project. As a result, Loop Road, Johnston Drive and Janik Drive were repaired and repaved. Karvo Companies completed on-site work in July. This project was designed by Karpinski Engineering, Inc.
Library Third Floor Renovations for CCI Dean's Suite KSU-17L042
Space on the third floor of the Library, behind the School of Library and Information Sciences (SLIS), was renovated to accommodate the College of Communication and Information (CCI) Dean's office, student huddle space, grant space and conference areas. New furniture, new finishes, and MEP systems were installed for the fit-out. CCI moved Digital Sciences into the SLIS space once occupied by the CCI Dean's office to bring the School, Digital Sciences, and CCI together into shared space. Stitle Construction Corporation's work was completed in early summer. Moody-Nolan, Inc. designed this project.
MAC Center Center-Hung Scoreboard Replacement KSU-18L055
The existing, center-hung video board system in the Memorial Athletic and Convocation Center (MACC) will be replaced with a new system. The existing system is outdated and cannot support new technologies. The new scoreboard system will be adaptive for all five sponsored programs that host competitions in the venue and create an improved fan experience. Hilscher-Clarke Electric Company's on-site work was completed at the end of October. The Osborn Engineering Company, OSPORTS Division designed this project.
Mathematical Sciences Building Parking Lot Renovation KSU-18L067
The layout of Mathematical Sciences Building parking lot was redesigned to improve circulation. This project is part of phased construction in this area of campus and will coordinate and finish connections to both the Summit Street Improvements and the Smith Hall Renovations projects. Perrin Asphalt Company's construction was completed this August. This project was designed by Knight & Stolar, Inc.
Pre-Qualified Architects List KSU-18L134
Kent State University Office of the University Architect pre-qualified firms to provide architectural and landscape architectural services for projects that are not advertised through the Ohio Register, or other media. This pre-qualification process determines the list of firms that will be eligible for award of contracts for the period covering July 1, 2018 through June 30, 2020. Services will be in support of KSU design of projects, as well as support Local Administration of projects. Consultants are utilized for small projects, studies or criteria architects for design build or specialized tasks in which the A/E selection process would be unnecessarily cumbersome. Upon completion of the selection process, where appropriate, KSU will seek Controlling Board approval for total contract awards to each pre-qualified firm up to the amount of $250,000 for a two-year period. Each individual assignment may range in the amount of $25,000 - $75,000 per project; however, there are exceptions where fees for an individual assignment exceed $75,000. The number of pre-qualified architectural consultants and landscape architectural consultants selected through this process is within the discretion of KSU. While the pre-qualified status means that a firm is eligible for award of contracts, there is no guarantee that a firm will be awarded any work or representation of the amount of work a firm may receive within the two-year period.

Rockwell Hall Replacement of Building Chillers KSU-17S076
At Rockwell Hall, the steam absorber chiller for the School of Fashion Design and Merchandising and the electric chiller for the KSU Fashion Museum were operating past their useful lifespan and were replaced with a new multi-stack chiller. S. A. Comunale Company's work was completed in mid-June. This project was designed by the Office of the University Architect and Scheeser Buckley Mayfield, LLC.
Salem Classroom Building Academic Services and Learning Center Renovation KSU-17S502
The Academic Services and Learning Center areas were relocated and renovated in the Main Classroom Building of Salem Campus. Academic Services now has new offices and conferencing space for all student service functions. The Learning Center now has new group study and collaboration spaces for the benefit of student teaming, leaning, and curricular assistance. Stitle Construction Corporation's work was completed this summer. This project was designed in-house by the Office of the University Architect.
Salem Classroom Building Partial Roof Replacement – Areas C and F KSU-17L501
Salem Classroom Building roofing systems in areas C and F were out of warranty and exhibiting substantial failure. Roof leaks were on-going and the existing seams/membrane cannot be effectively repaired. The project entailed partial tear-off and replacement of the existing roof areas identified as "Roof Areas C and F." Tear-off included all insulation and flashings down to the structural roof deck of the building. Roof insulation was upgraded to meet current building codes and standards. Cardinal Maintenance Roofing's construction was completed this summer. This project was designed by Van Auken Akins Architects, LLC.
Stark Fine Arts Building Addition and Renovations KSU-16S601
Built in 1972, the Stark Fine Arts Building is a 65,000 sf two-story structure which houses the Theater, Art, and Music programs, along with general classrooms, faculty and staff offices. The two-story addition, located on the east side, encompasses approximately 13,500 sf and is primarily devoted to the Music department, accommodating practice rooms, offices, performance spaces and classrooms. Selected areas in the existing building formerly used by the Theater, Art and Music departments were also renovated. Theater department renovations included new multi-use rigging, updated costume design areas, and a new sound and lighting classroom. Art department classroom renovations included a shop area dust collection system, an exterior production area, and interior gallery spaces. Site development included pedestrian walkways, lighting and landscaping. VendRick Construction's construction is complete. The addition was finished by the start of spring semester; all renovations were on schedule for completion this summer. This project was designed by Hasenstab Architects, Inc.
Stark Main Hall Elevator Modernization KSU-17L603
Modernization of the Stark Main Hall elevator involved replacement of the electromagnetic controls with a microprocessor control system, the AC to DC generator with a variable drive AC motor, re-roping the hoistway, and a new cab on the existing sling, code upgrades for fire service, and installation of new lanterns and call stations at each floor. Stitle Construction Corporation's work was completed by early August. This project was designed in-house by the Office of the University Architect.
Student Recreation and Wellness Center Pool Pak Units Replacement KSU-17L078
For the Student Recreation and Wellness Center pools, two PoolPak energy recovery dehumidification units were removed and replaced. The outside condensing units, wiring, piping, controls and connection ductwork were also removed and replaced and vibration control measures were implemented. This project was designed by Scheeser Buckley Mayfield, LLC and Mielke Mechanical was the General Contactor.
Summit Street Parking Lots, Phase III KSU-15L061
As part of the long-range plan for the campus area along Summit Street, Phase III of this project allowed for the final expansion of the Kent Student Center visitors’ parking lot and reconfiguration of the East-half of the South Campus Center Drive commuter parking lots. The parking lots re-opened in mid-August. Regency Construction Services, Inc. served as the Design-Builder of this project.
Tuscarawas Founders Hall A-, G-, and H-Wings Roof Replacement KSU-16S808
Severe winter weather caused deterioration of the Tuscarawas Founders Hall roof areas 'A', 'G', and 'H'. The existing roof was beyond its warrantied life expectancy and portions of the roof were severely leaking. The roof was replaced with an EPDM and sloped insulation system; this project followed replacement of the Founders Hall A-Wing Cooling Tower. Campopiano Roofing Company's construction was completed this summer. This project was designed by Van Auken Akins Architects, LLC.
Williams Hall Research Lab 302 Renovations KSU-18L047
The laboratory in 302 of Williams Hall was renovated and modernized for a new research faculty member. Stitle Construction Corporation's work in the lab was completed this summer. This project was designed in-house by the Office of the University Architect.
