OFFICE INFORMATION
Established in 1973, Kent State's Safety & Community Care within University Housing is nationally recognized for its excellence and for its status as the only program of its kind that is staffed by student leaders. Student Safety Assistants who work within Safety & Community Care complete escorts, while also completing rounds in the residence halls in the evenings. Safety Assistants receive 100 hours of training, learning fire prevention, emergency procedures, conflict resolution, de-escalation, strategies to promote mental wellness and more. Safety & Community is open daily from 12 p.m. (noon) to 4 a.m.
WHAT DO SAFETY ASSISTANTS DO?
In addition to being available for escorts, Safety Assistants complete rounds in every residence hall during the evenings. While completing rounds, Safety Assistants inspect fire safety equipment, enforce policies, build relationships with students, help resolve conflicts and assist residents with any questions or issues they may have. They are also in communication with the Kent State Police Department, other University Housing staff members and other campus partners.
ESCORT SERVICE
The most widely used service offered by Safety & Community Care is the escort service. Students can call 330-672-7004 to request an escort to/from any location on campus during the office’s open hours.
HOW CAN I BECOME A SAFETY ASSISTANT?
Current on-campus residents and off-campus students who are interested in applying may apply online. Applicants are evaluated based on their ability to complete work in line with University Housing's core values: community, growth & well-being, integrity, and social justice.
ABANDONED PROPERTY
After students move out of their rooms, University Housing may collect abandoned property that is deemed items of value. University Housing stores items of value for a minimum of 30 days, and a maximum of 60 days. After this time, University Housing will donate the abandoned property to a local nonprofit.
Examples of items that are not deemed as valuable are hangers, cleaning supplies, power strips, mirrors, mattress pads, pillows, and socks which will be discarded and not placed in our abandoned property collections.
University Housing is not responsible for any items that are left behind and discarded, as it is the student’s responsibility to remove all personal belongings upon move out. If you believe you left property on campus after a departure, please contact Safety and Community Care at 330-672-7004.
