Garden Distribution
Flash's Food Garden allows students to help combat food insecurity on campus and in the community.
Recent statistics calculate Stark County's population as roughly 374,979 people. Of this population, 14.9% are unsure where their next meal is coming from. Food insecurity affects 55,880 people in Stark County alone. Of this amount, 31% of these people are ineligible for food-related help (either from SNAP or WIC) and rely completely on charitable support to get their next meal.
GARDEN PRODUCE
Flash's Food Garden produces a wide variety of fresh vegetables. Produce grown included:
- Tomatoes: 316.3 oz or 42%
- Cucumbers: 107.9 oz or 14%
- Eggplants: 105.8 oz. or 14%
- Carrots: 50.7 oz. or 7%
- Squash: 39.5 oz. or 5%
- Radishes: 33.2 oz. or 4%
- Beans: 32.2 oz. or 4%
- Bell Peppers: 18 oz. or 3%
- Onions: 24.7 oz. or 3%
- Banana Peppers: 17.3 oz. or 2%
- Brussel Sprouts: 16.7 oz. or 2%
The garden's total yield was 762.3 oz. or 47.6 lbs. of food.
GARDEN DISTRIBUTION
The vegetables produced by Flash's Food Garden are distributed to different areas giving the community access to the various fresh produce grown. Produce was distributed to:
- Interfaith Campus Preschool: 40%
- Flash's Food Pantry: 38%
- Meals on Wheels: 10%
- Other: 12%
88% of the garden's produce is distributed to Flash's Food Pantry, Interfaith Campus Preschool and Meals on Wheels.
