Please note: STEM is an acronym for the academic disciplines of science, technology, engineering and mathematics. There is NOT a single, unified definition of STEM. Every agency and organization defines it differently. Some agencies use the CIP to define STEM, and those CIP-to-STEM lists vary from agency to agency (and sometimes even within an agency).

Offering programs of study for a variety of business and manufacturing careers, Kent State can help students explore everything from materials chemistry to cybersecurity engineering and computer-aided design. Students in the applied engineering program get hands-on learning experiences in the on-campus foundry.

Young learners in grades 3-8 can find STEM camps, campus tours and other learning opportunities on Kent State’s Kent Campus and several of our Regional Campuses. These programs are designed so that young students can explore their interests and discover the STEM areas they enjoy most.

Check out a list of previous opportunities to get a sense of camp opportunities that lead to careers!

Discover Summer at Grand River Academy

Throughout two-week sessions, campers built, flew, and coded their own robots and drones. After completing their drones and robots, campers designed a website to bring their creations to market.

Exploring Robotics

Campers explored coding and computational thinking through hands-on experiences with a variety of programmable robots including mBots, Ozobot Evos, Edisons, and Sphero SPRK+.

Junior Adventures With Robots

Young campers were introduced to the fundamentals of coding as they explored a variety of programmable robots including Blue-Bots, Ozobot Evos, Edisons, and Sphero SPRK+.

Full STEAM Ahead with LEGO® SPIKE™ Essential

LEGO® SPIKE™ Essential is LEGO’s learning platform for amplifying children’s understanding of concepts for science, technology, literacy, and math. Campers engaged in hands-on investigation of STEAM concepts as they built with LEGO® elements and program with the intuitive SPIKE™ App.

3D Digital Design for Augmented Reality and Printing

Campers used 3DSlash and Maker Empire to design 3D projects for printing and use CoSpaces and Merge Cubes to create augmented reality projects. Each camper also printed out one of their projects to take home.

Digital Game Design

Campers built from their excitement for video games and learned to design and program their own playable digital games using tools such as RPG Maker MV and more.

Young Women's Summer Institute

YWSI is a week-long program sponsored by the Ohio Supercomputer Center (OSC) for middle school girls in Ohio. Designed to provide hands-on experience with computers, math, science and engineering, YWSI helped girls develop an interest in these subjects by allowing them to work on practical, interesting scientific problems using the latest computer technology.

Girls Geared for Engineering (GGFE)

Participants will explore the exciting worlds of mechanical, electrical, computer, and systems engineering through hands-on projects like flying mini-drones and launching rockets. Participants will have fun and gain valuable insights into potential engineering careers through site visits to well-known local companies.

High school students are invited to Kent State’s campuses for tours, activities and events to explore Kent State STEM majors and learn more about exciting opportunities in STEM careers.

High School Visits

We are happy to have welcomed large high school and community groups for on-campus visits. Students have had the opportunity to tour facilities, meet with current students/faculty, and participate in hands-on activities experienced in the College of Aeronautics and Engineering at Kent State University. Group tours have been available for groups of 8 or more.

Summer Institute

SI is the Ohio Supercomputer Center's two-week residential program where gifted high school students learn through project-based, hands-on experiences. Working in small teams, students used OSC's supercomputers to solve complex science and engineering problems, catch hackers using network forensics, study the spread of the bird flu, design computer games and more.

College of Aeronautics and Engineering Camps

Aeronautics Careers Education (A.C.E.) Academy and the Nikki Kukwa Aeronautics Memorial Camp offer immersive experiences for students interested in engineering and aeronautics. Two unique camp opportunities will engage students in hands-on experiences and expose campers to diverse aeronautics careers through industry visits and flight experiences.

Creative Coding Workshop

High school students curious about coding are invited to a hands-on Creative Coding Workshop to learn the basics of JavaScript, providing the perfect opportunity for them to express creativity through coding in a supportive learning environment.
