Dear Kent State University Students, Faculty and Staff,

I am pleased to announce that Kent State is embarking on a new climate study as we continue our effort to become a more diverse, equitable and inclusive university.

Dramatic events nationally, regionally and locally have occurred since we conducted our last climate study five years ago. Widespread social unrest over the past year alone illustrates just how vitally important it is that we pause to take the temperature of our community. The survey will cover a number of topics to understand the wide-ranging perspectives of the students and employees who make up this great institution.

This survey extends the work that was done in our 2016 Great Places Initiative. Coupled with the ongoing work of our Anti-Racism Task Force formed last year, it is our hope that this survey will provide the valuable insight needed to propel Kent State’s efforts to eliminate injustice and inequality on our campuses.

We know that all of us are shaped by our personal experiences and perceptions, which is why everyone’s participation – particularly students’ – is so important.  This is an unprecedented opportunity for everyone to contribute to our university’s strategic planning process, which will help mold the future of Kent State.

Information gathered from this study will further our understanding of everyone’s experience at Kent State and, we hope, shed bright light on areas where we need to change and improve. Our core values of respect and kindness for all demand that we pursue solutions to any social inequity as it might exist in our community. This climate study is one way in which we hope to include all voices in the chorus that shapes Kent State’s future.

When this survey arrives in your email Thursday, I strongly encourage you to join me and take some time to answer the questions thoughtfully and honestly. Only by your widespread participation can we truly gain insight into the Kent State experience and determine how we may create a better future for our university.

Every voice is important, and I ask that you please share yours.

Sincerely,

Todd Diacon

President
