At the beginning of each school year, Kent State University faculty, staff and students volunteer to help incoming freshmen move into the university’s residence halls. The annual service program, called Movers and Groovers, is coordinated by Kent Interhall Council, the student government of the residence halls on the Kent Campus. The volunteers aid new students and their families, providing assistance and helping to make the move-in process less stressful.
This year, freshman move-in day was Thursday, Aug. 24, from 8 a.m.-7 p.m. More than 600 people volunteered with the Movers and Groovers program this year.
“Movers and Groovers is such a great way to welcome our incoming students," said Jill Jenkins, executive director of Residence Services at Kent State. “Kent Interhall Council is the group responsible for the student-run and organized program. Volunteers include fraternities and sororities, campus ministry groups, academic groups and university departments. Move-in truly takes a village, and Movers and Groovers really highlights the community support on day one for helping to ensure new students feel welcome.”
The Movers and Groovers program is part of Kent State’s Welcome Weekend, an orientation program that runs for four days prior to the start of fall classes. Welcome Weekend includes activities and events to encourage students to explore the Kent State community and provides a smooth transition to the university environment.
