Internship: Business of Home (Magazine) through the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME)

As an intern with Business of Home (based out of New York City) this summer, journalism major Catie Pusateri assists with building online articles, researching for stories and fact-checking. She secured the opportunity through the American Society of Magazine Editors (ASME) and has had the opportunity to meet with leaders at New York Times Magazine and GQ Magazine.

“This internship has shown me that magazine journalism is definitely for me, and it's only made me more excited to enter into the world of magazines after graduation. Although I love to write, I've also discovered a passion for copyediting, which opens up more possibilities for my future career in magazine journalism,” she says.

Her work as a web writer and managing editor for A Magazine through Kent State Student Media prepared her for this opportunity because she’s seen the inner workings of a magazine. Classes like Reporting and Advanced Magazine Writing taught her about deadlines, interviewing and longform writing.

Advice for future interns: 

"Networking can be intimidating, and I'm sure you've heard this a million times, but it's definitely important if you want to get your name out there and set yourself up for success. Don't forget to network with your peers as well because as we each climb the ladder in our respective industries, we can lift each other up along the way. Also, when working in a professional environment, try to connect with your coworkers so that you enjoy coming to work and interacting with them. It's never a bad thing to ask for help or to ask questions along the way, so don't feel like you have to have it all figured out right away."
